Comparatives
In hebrew we use two word phrases to indicate comparison
יוֹתֵר מִ and פָּחוֹת
מִ
The form of a sentence using a comparative is as following:
- <
מִ or
מִן followed by the second item being compared>
[יוֹתֵר
or פָּחוֹת] <adjective
describing comparison> <first Item being compared>
Example: הָעֵץ גָבֹהַּ יוֹתֵר מֵהַבַּיִת
Example: הָעֵץ גָבֹהַּ יוֹתֵר
מִן הַבַּיִת
- <
מִ or
מִן followed by the second item being compared>
<adjective describing comparison> [יוֹתֵר
or פָּחוֹת]
<adjective describing comparison> <first Item being compared>
Example: הָעֵץ יוֹתֵר גָבֹהַּ מֵהַבַּיִת
Example: הָעֵץ יוֹתֵר גָבֹהַּ
מִן
הַבַּיִת
Notes:
- The מ comes from the word
מִן since the final
ן dropped out, a dagesh forte needs to follow the
מ. In the above examples, the מ
is followed by a guttural (the letter
ה) so no dagesh is used and we need to lengthen the vowel
under the מ.
